Defenders of Stara Zagora Memorial Complex

In endless vigil

The memorial complex recreates the Samara flag - one of the most important military symbols of Bulgaria, defined as a national sanctuary.

The memorial complex was erected in remembrance of the heroic and tragic events that have befalled the city during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). It was dedicated to the battle of Stara Zagora on July 19/31, 1877. There is an ossuary laid at the bases of the waving flag, which the Bulgarian volunteers and the Russian soldiers protected at the cost of their lives. The words of the poet Mikhail Berberov are written on the sarcophagus"Stara Zagora, Stara Zagora, a living city with foundations stuck in bones..."
The figures of six volunteers and a Russian officer are in endless vigil in front of the flag –a symbol of the insuperable barrier before the enemy hordes of Suleyman Pasha and of the six volunteer regiments, thereby giving rise to the future Bulgarian army.
The memorial walls tell about the path of the Samara flag from the moment of its handing over to the Bulgarian volunteers in the Romanian city of Ploesht on May 6/18, 1877 to the epic defence battle for Stara Zagora in July 1877.
A monumental staircase with a hundred steps reminds that the monument was erected a century after the battles for Stara Zagora. In remembrance of the self-sacrifice and courage of the city defenders, on July 30, 1977 „The Defenders of Stara Zagora Memorial Complex“ was inaugurated.
The complex is one of the favourite places for the people of Stara Zagora, and the view from here to the city and its surroundings is unique. It is included in the list of the 100 National Tourist Sites.
