Art Gallery - Stara Zagora

Meeting with the art

Today the gallery holds a total exhibition area of 1,200 square metres.

Gallery collection numbers over 4,000 works, divided into six divisions: "Painting", "Graphics", "Sculpture", "Icon Painting", "Renaissance Engravings", "Applied Arts". They feature works by almost all Bulgarian artists from the last two centuries.

The idea to create an art gallery in Stara Zagora dates back to the end of the 19th century and was related to Anton Mitov – the future Patriarch of Bulgarian Fine Arts. In 1908 this had already been done. An art collection was set up at the "Augusta Trayana" Archaeological Society, and the first canvas therein was the portrait of the revolutionary Kolyo Ganchev, painted by the artist Nikola Stoenchev.

The art collection grew over the years, and in the second half of the 50's, it was prepared to differentiate from a department of the History Museum  into an independent cultural institution, already serving as such in 1959. A few more dozens of works, dispersed to schools, community centres and associations, have been transferred to its collection.

In 2000,  the former building of the market halls, constructed in the 30s of teh twentieth century and emblematic for the city, was given for a new base of the Art Gallery.

Due to its rich collection, exposition activities and publicity, Art Gallery - Stara Zagora is among the most significant in the country.
