The Neolithic Dwellings Museum

A house of 8 thousand years in the heart of the ancient city

The Neolithic dwellings are one of the must-see places for tourists in Stara Zagora.

The museum moves visitors more than 8,000 years backwards in time. The earliest inhabitants got settled here during the Neolithic Age (end of 7th & ndash; 6th millennium BC) and with small interruptions, life in this place  continued until the Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC).

The best preserved ruins of a residential building in Europe from the beginning of 6th millennium BC can be seen here. It was a two-storey house, built of wooden stakes and intertwined rods, coated with clay and straw. It had two rooms on the first floor and one on the second floor. Three families lived therein, that being evident from the furnaces, granaries, hand mills, variously decorated pottery found etc. The votive altars - ceramic columns, branched like bull horns at their upper end are also well-preserved, and the inhabitants of the house performed their rituals there.

In the arranged permanent museum exposure  the visitors can get in touch with the loveliest masterpieces created so far, such as ceramic pots and figures, jewelry and labour tools, marble human figures, etc. Don't miss to get acquainted with the life and work of the creators of the Europe's first civilization.

The museum is included in the list of the National Movement of the Bulgarian Tourist Union „Discover Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites“.
