"Literary Stara Zagora" Museum

The City of Poets

„The city of poets” – This is how Stara Zagora was called back in 1919.

For a period shorter than a century, authors whose works belong to the Golden fund of Bulgarian literature were born and did their great works here. Among them, in the early twentieth century and especially around the First World War, are the names of Kiril Hristov, Georgi Iliev, Dimitar Podvarzachov, Georgi Raychev, Nikolay Liliev, Ivan Hadzhihristov, Geo Milev, Ivan Mirchev, and in the years between the two world wars– Ami Bakalov, Magda Petkanova, Ofeliya Kasabova, Hristo Ognyanov, Veselin Hanchev. In order to keep the invaluable literary resource and present the city contribution to the national literature of this period, a specialized museum exposition was created in 1961. Over the decades, thousands of documents, authentic manuscripts and exhibits complemented the museum fund.

The renovated Museum "Literary Stara Zagora" opened its doors in 2019. Original archives, manuscripts, notebooks, photographs and documents, books, personal belongings and unique objects belonging to poets and writers who lived and worked in Stara Zagora after the end of the 19th century were featured in its exhibition halls. Many works of art – paintings, graphics, sculptures, have been also added to the large collection.

For those fond of history and exquisite language, this is a place for a magnetic meeting with the literary fame of Stara Zagora.
