Antique Forum Complex of Augusta Trayana

The too brilliant city of the Trayans

„The too brilliant city of the Trayans“- this is how the city of Augusta Trayana was named.

It was founded around year 106-107 by Marcus Ulpius Traianus. In the 2nd – 3rd century it was one of the most beautiful and large cities, an important economic, political, administrative and spiritual centre of the Roman province of Thrace. Monumental public buildings were built, the straight and pointed to the edges of the earth streets were covered with massive stone slabs. At the time when the Roman Empire was ruled by Marcus Aurelius (161-180), the city was given the right to mint its own issues of bronze coins. With some interruptions, this lasted for almost 100 years.
The Forum of Augusta Trayana is located in the very centre of Stara Zagora and is part of the ‘Augusta Trayana - Vereya – Boruy’ Archaeological Reserve“. The territory on which it is located covers about 7 decares and includes а stone-paved square with a pedestal for a statue, an amphitheater auditorium for over 1,300 spectators, thermal baths, fortress walls, the Western Gate and part of the main street of the ancient city (decumanus maximus).
The Antique Forum is still a stage for many performances, concerts and other events. You can feel like the citizens of the ancient Augusta Trayana while watching a spectacle or a concert or walk down the authentic street.
