Geo Milev Drama Theatre

100 years - an endless dialogue

„Geo Milev“ Drama Theatre is an iconic cultural institute in the city, standing out as a real spiritual centre.

The patron it adopted is the renowned poet Geo Milev, whose life destiny is permanently bonded to Stara Zagora.

The theatre art exist in Stara Zagora for more than 150 years, and the first theatre performance was on April 18, 1870, based on P. R. Slaveykov's play – „Malakova“. . Later on the following titles come „The Long-Suffering Genoveva“ (1870), „The Quack Doctors“ (1871), „Krum the Horrible“ (1871). Something curious about the history of the theatre is the fact that the first members of the local revolutionary committee, organized by Vasil Levski, were also the first actors from Stara Zagora – Petar Ivanov, Tacho Syarov, Hristo Zafirov, Atanas Popgeorgiev, Pencho Bratov, Georgi Hadzhiiliev. A little over forty years after the first performance, in 1916,  the poet and playwright Geo Milev staged the plays „Oedipus Rex“ by Sophocles and „The Government Inspector“ by Gogol. The 1919/1920 season marked the launch of the professional theatre in Stara Zagora and on December 12, 2019 the Drama Theatre celebrated its 100th anniversary.

The building  of the Old Theatre, as it is often called by the people of Stara Zagora, is   one of the iconic city buildings, work of the well-known architect Nikola Lazarov. It was constructed in the period 1912-1914 and it reminds of the Viennese Baroque style.
