House Museum of the Urban Lifestyle in 19th century

Learn the personal history of the Bulgarian

The house of Hadzhi Angel describes the personal history of the Bulgarians, the changes in their lives, their lifestyle and homes.

It was built in 1883 by the Debar master Georgi for the family of the wealthy merchant Hadzhi Angel Hadzhipetkov. Located in the central part of the city, once there was a large yard with a lot of flowers, boxwoods and greenery therein.
There are many exhibits from the late 19th century to the 60s of the 20th century in the house. Traditional local objects coexist with modern items arrived from Europe and Russia in the furnished guest rooms, parlor, lounge and bedroom.
Visitors will find here how clothes have changed according to the fashion trends and how „‘modern technologies’“ have entered the life of Bulgarians. The items such as washing machine, electric iron, radio, and gramophone are no longer luxury goods, but convenient and accessible products for many households.
There is also room in the house for the world of child’s universe, revealing their interests - toys, books, textbooks and other objects of their everyday life.
