Regional History Museum - Stara Zagora

The Magic Hourglass

Тhe museum exposition offers visitors the opportunity to explore everything about the millennial history of the city, starting from the early Neolithic (the beginning of the 6th millennium BC), through the golden age of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the restoration of Stara Zagora after the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878).

More than 100 thousand artefacts are kept in the museum collection, articulating the rich 8 thousand years of the city history to the visitors. Among the priceless exhibits presented on the three levels of the museum exposition are: a bronze helmet-mask, a Sarmatian sword with the name of king Enismey on it, a golden necklace, a glass phial with a dancing woman, а votive tablet of the Thracian horseman from the 2nd century, the coins of Augustus Trayana, a stone slab of a lioness with a little lion – which has become the main symbol in the coat of arms of Stara Zagora, a copy of Paisiy’s „Slavo-Bulgarian history” from 1837 etc.

Situated in the city center, the Regional History Museum is located in a unique hourglass-shaped building. It rises above the well-preserved part of the main street of the ancient city of Augusta Trayana, where visitors can still walk down today. Numerous exhibits dating back to the same period are displayed on this level of the museum exposition and the plot, colours and the fine craftmanship of one of the mosaics named „The Procession of Dionysus“, are impressive.

The museum offers the unforgettable chance to ‘time travel’, which combines unique museum pieces with a cutting-edge technology and presents an exciting experience in the world of history.

The museum is included in list of the national movement of the Bulgarian Tourist Union „Discover Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites“.
